My grandfather, Herb Borah, moved to the remote town of Roseau, Minnesota, in the 1940s to build and operate a movie theatre. He named it the Roso as a play on the towns name. The lady behind the candy counter, I am pretty sure, is my mom – Beverly. Many years before, she had to spend every day watching five kids.
What I love about these photos is what they show of the design. Herb did an outstanding job of using the then modern art-deco movement in a way that wasn’t overkill for a small town in Minnesota, providing one of the most beautiful facilities in the whole county.
